Don Ameche as John Bickerson

Original Bickersons Program

The Bickersons shows are a good example of early commercial broadcasts: short weekly or daily comedy skits that were easily sandwiched with their commercials in time slots targeting domestic housewives and their help. They should be heard with their ads which give a more complete image of the culture. Reprising these shows can't recall the flavor of Lucky Strikes when people were blissfully ignorant of the harmful byproducts of tobacco usage.

The Bickersons depicted a middle-aged couple, John and Blanche, performed by Don Ameche and Francis Langford and this program is reputed to have been the inspiration for Jackie Gleason's TV show, The Honeymooners.

SDRT approached this program with an eye to creating social satire based on a conversation that becomes an argument. Ironically, each Bickerson's program begins with John's signature snore, which is then interrupted by Blanche who is awakened or kept awake by it. After a five minute dialogue there's a punch line.
